The Beers

Alicia and I enjoy many outdoor activities. Alicia has long had a life goal of bicycling across America. It sounded like a great adventure to me. This was an opportune pause in our lives with a recent job loss (May 2009), so with just three weeks of planning and training - we were off.

This trek started May 24th, 2009 from Anacortes, Washington ending 65 days later in Portland, Maine (We had expected 60 days to Bar Harbor, Maine.).

3964 spinning miles!! Biggest day 115 miles. ~~Pete Beer

Gear

Here is our gear. It is heavier than desired:

Petes Gear: 68.2 lbs
Alicias Gear: 51.9 lbs

We will think about what we can jettison. I wanted us to be nearer
40 each.

Outfitters

R.E.I. --> Camping gear, bikes
Bike Gallery --> Great Portland bike store
Performance Bicycles --> Bike gear
Bike Nashbar --> Bike gear
Arkel --> Front paniers
Amazon --> Some interesting electronics
iPhone --> This enables so much capability, I couldn't leave it out. Navigator, GPS with waypoints for the bike route, Twitter, Skype, Blog, email, pictures. Just way too cool. It's the kind of cold that makes it stick to your skin. I mean, who would want to let loose of their iphone once they have experienced the ultimate cool!

Staying in Touch

We are leaving this Sunday, May 24th. Starting in Anacortes Washington, we will ceremoniously dip our tires into the waters of Puget Sound and head East.

Today we hurriedly finish packing, turn off services, send the puppy on his journey. We may also catch a showing of Angels and Demons.

There are so many changes in our lives right now. Losing the job puts many other things in jeopardy. We are working with everyone involved to work out the best solution for all parties. Above all, we are Christians first and are looking to maintain our Christian integrity.

We plan to stay in touch using this blog, cell phones, email, and, soon to come, twitter. Subscribe to our blog to stay posted on our journey. We plan to update at least once a day. By the way, we are moderating comments. Feel free to make comments; they will not show up until they have been reviewed.

A Different Journey

Pickles is off to Boston today!  He'll be living with Ashley and Robert.  He is sorely missed.  Check out this proud puppy!

Getting Ready

Adventure Cycling provided great help in understanding what was needed to get ready. Overall we needed to get physically ready, equip for the ride, and understand what is involved with riding across America.

The route chosen is the Northern Tier Route which follows along the northern edge of the United States. 4,322 miles.
